Ben – Support Worker
Hi, I’m Ben and I work as a support worker at our Highfield park site in North Wales.
I really love what I do and every day is different. I support two or three different residents and help them in a load of different ways – one day we might be working together to develop cooking and housekeeping skills. The day after we might be out for the day visiting the resident’s family or on a trip to go swimming or we might be taking part in some of the activities here at Highfield Park.
I hadn’t considered a career in care. I left school with a couple of GCSEs and did a few dead end jobs before coming here. I got loads of training to help me to work well with the residents and I’m currently studying for my VQ Level 2. After that I want to work towards my VQ3 and become a team leader. One day I would like to manage one of the homes.
Working here makes me feel great. It’s challenging sometimes but really rewarding when I can see the residents that I work with make great progress.
Amanda – Staff Nurse
I’m Amanda, I’m a staff nurse at Newton House in Blackpool. We look after 21 patients.
I started my career in the NHS and did a degree in Mental Health Nursing. After gaining a few years’ experience I decided to move into the independent hospital sector where I felt I could have more engagement with patients and work more effectively to support their rehabilitation and recovery.
Many of our patients are here for quite a while and that means we can establish trusting relationships. I love working as part of a close knit multi-disciplinary team and helping patients to make real progress.
I feel really proud of what I have achieved here. I’m really glad that I chose to be a mental health nurse. It’s just a valuable and satisfying as caring for people with physical health needs and MHC is a great place to work. I get lots of opportunities for CPD that support my revalidation and work with supportive colleagues that share my values and aspirations.
